You're Going To HATE What I Have To Say.

"I'm Going To Change Your Life In One Easy Step!" I get emails like this all the time. Personalities who say they will radically change your life instantly. All you have to do is believe (and spend $195, $795, 0r $8995) and you will get the secret to the riches of the universe without lifting a finger.

I just received another one today:  "Rewire your mindset to become unbeatable!" "Grow your financial fortune!" "Get ultra-fit and feel better than ever before!" "Achieve all the goals you never could achieve before!"

It's magic! And if you send them your money, they will change your life! Of course, they are highly successful, jetting around the world, filming videos in really cool places. So they must know the secret!

I get together with a number of high-level coaches each month and we are a bit perplexed with the success of these people who sell 21st century snake oil. Don't people get it? Here are some immutable rules of life:

  1. Change doesn't happen overnight. It took you a long time to get where you are and it will take a little bit of determined work to get you where you want to be. Yes, you can 'change your mindset' — but the journey will be long, hard, and you will have to gird yourself against falling back into old routines.
  2. You won't make seven figures right out of the gate. Unless you have a foolproof hair-growth formula (I'll buy it), incremental gains will only occur if you make the right decisions, at the right time, and deliver a powerful product/service that a lot of people see and want to buy.
  3. You won't look like Ryan Gosling instantly. I don't know what 'ultra-fit' means, but after speaking with my personal trainer, it takes months/years to get (and stay) 'ultra-fit'.

Here's my 'secret' prescription for change:

  • You need a roadmap. If you don't know where you are and where you want to go, you're going to fail. You also need a step-by-step plan of tasks and activities to get you there.
  • You will need to focus. Don't get distracted by shiny objects — it will be hard to stay on track and not veer off into uncharted territory where you might get demotivated.
  • You are going to test your limits of confidence and work. It's going to be hard at times — you will have to push yourself more than you ever have before.
  • You are going to have to be open to change a few key things in your life. Bad habits and decisions are hard to break — you have to chart a new course and stay on it.
  • You are going to make many mistakes along the way. It's a fact of business — take chances and you might fail. It's how you stand up and keep going.
  • You are going to have to make a LOT of new friends. You have to reach out farther than you ever have before — meet people who are scary — make hundreds of new friends.
  • You need a little luck. Yes, luck. Luck appears when you open yourself up to new opportunities, options, and friends. And you cast away bad habits and procrastination.

Think of the new successful tier of business - Tim Cook (Apple), Brin & Page (Google), Jeff Bezos (Amazon), Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Jack Ma (Alibaba), etc. They all have and currently work quite hard at their roles to get and stay where they are today. Want to be highly successful? Want to be a star? You have to work it.

What Do You Want Most?

In today's society, we tend to go for immediate gratification when it comes to our wants and needs.

Discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most. In today's society, we tend to go for immediate gratification when it comes to our wants and needs. It's funny — I just read a great post how one person replace their current wants with less expensive alternatives and ultimately got a major need in less than three years - a $10,000 down payment on a house - see link.

The best way to define the difference between the two is to sit down (and if you have a spouse/partner, sit them down too) and list all of your current wants. And then list all of your future wants.

The list above is a great example of one of these pages. It's simple, straightforward, and gets to the point quickly. How would this person move the focus from their current wants to the things they want the most?

  • Starbucks Every Day - make your own coffee. At an average of $3 per day, they would save over $1000 each year.
  • 2 New Cars Every Three Years - Buy used cars and forgo the $300-$400 per month payment (2x). Yearly savings = $10,000 per year.
  • Big Screen TV - Stick with your old 36" that works just fine. Savings = $2000.
  • Full Cable - Eliminate Cable and watch Netflix - $100/month to $7.95/month. Savings = $1,104/yearly.
  • 3-4 Vacations Per Year - Family of four - Average vacation costs $3-4K - Only take 1 vacation and add very small weekend trips. Savings = $12,000/yearly.
  • New Clothes - Slow down your clothes purchases. Savings = $2000/yearly.
  • New iPhone Every Year - Savings = $200-300 (depending on cancel/exchange fees).

Add it up . . . we're looking at a potential (be calm, I'm ball-parking it here as an example) of $28,404 the first year and $15-25K every year after (you'll need another used car, TV, etc. someday).

If you stick to your plan of NOW vs. MOST - over 10 years, you'll have $200-250K in your savings account. What can you now pick off from the list on the right?

Okay - this is simple math - but I'm doing it to prove a point. You can exchange your NOW wants with your MOST wants. Instantly. And all it takes is just a simple piece of paper. And a lot of DISCIPLINE.

Why I Attended My Coaching Session This Morning.

As I began to walk to my car to begin my workday I began to smile to myself and though okay today turned out to be a more meaningful session than anticipated.

Just received this from one of my oldest clients a few minutes ago — I thought I would publish it verbatim. Enjoy! When I rolled over in bed at 5:45 this morning, my usual weekday wake up time, I began to think about my day and realized I had my normally scheduled coaching session at 7:30, meaning I would have to get out of bed soon.

I was thinking I wish I could just cancel the session and grab another hour of sleep. I felt that the session today was going to be less meaningful than others.  There was no “hot and heavy” issue facing me that needs immediate attention.

Oh well, I thought, I will go through the motions and if it turns out that the session is a bust, so be it.  I decided that I would use the session today to discuss a relatively minor event of the day before that had caused me some temporary angst but passed in short order.

My focus would be to ensure that events like these stayed in the temporary and minor range for me. Wasn’t sure a whole session could be filled with that but would go with the flow.

When I arrived at my meeting, spent the first bit catching up with my coach on personal “stuff”.  While chatting, I found myself staring at the piece of paper my coach always brings to every session, a blank, white sheet waiting to be filled with boxes and circles and lines outlining our discussion.

The sheet even had my name on top today reminding me that I was the focus of the session and needed to figure out what I wanted to go over with him.

My first thought was to go with the outline that my coach provides before every session- what were my accomplishments this week?  That would be easy since I made had contacted two people that were on my list from the last session. My coach provided positive reinforcement for doing this and discussed how the meeting that I had and the one that I was going to have were going to fit into my goals.

Where to go to next for the session, I thought about our prior discussion related to managing people that work for me and that I work with.  It was here I could bring up the event of the other day that I had dealt with. Again, my coach complimented my handling of the situation and offered further thoughts on how to set boundaries and expectations that would help when working with these people.

My coach then reminded me that the conference I was going to attend in two weeks, that I had previously mentioned in another session , would be another potential opportunity to identify additional resources for my business .  He told me to think about possibly inviting out one of the speakers of the conference to breakfast or for a drink.  He said a lot of times the speakers are alone at this type of conference and appreciate someone making an effort to include them in the fold.

As the session was nearing an end, I asked the coach how things were going for him.  He shared with me some of his business ideas he was working on and we chatted further about the potential profitability of these ideas. It got my creative juices flowing always thinking about how it is important to keep coming up with new business ideas to keep your business moving forward and be in the forefront of your profession.

We finished up with  setting up our appointment for the following week and said our goodbyes. As I began to walk to my car to begin my workday I began to smile to myself and though okay today turned out to be a more meaningful session than anticipated.

So why did I attend my coaching session at 7:30 this morning? 

  • To hold myself accountable on  a weekly basis
  • To feel good about my progress/accomplishments
  • To be proactive about my business and continual move it forward
  • To have a support mechanism for me and my business (business therapy)

So there it is — my client just made me feel wonderful for the weekend. I owe a lot of what I am today to her. - Rich

Be Proud Of Yourself.

As a coach, one of my responsibilities is to help my clients acknowledge their accomplishments. Why? Because we don't. We get so caught up in the rat-race, getting things done, moving as fast as possible — and we don't take the time to stop and review where we are and where we've come from.

A big part of my job is acknowledgement — I help my clients fully appreciate where they are in life — all the hard work, all the sweat and tears, all the long nights and early mornings — everything.

Why? It gives us perspective. It allows us to understand what it takes for us to really succeed. It also allows us to understand how hard we are on ourselves and how we forget all the hard work.

So . . . I want you to take a few minutes this morning and fully acknowledge where you are in life today:

  • Do you have a roof over your head? A lot of people don't.
  • Do you have a full stomach? A lot of people are hungry in this world.
  • Do you have a partner in life? Family? Good for you!
  • Are you employed? Nice work!
  • Do you have a car? Excellent!
  • Do you have a savings account? Good planning!

If you say yes to most of these questions — congratulations! If you have most - great job.

Be proud of yourself — who you are, what you do, who you impact, and what you leave behind. If you put yourself in the position of acknowledging your current position and what you've done — you have only one way to go — UP.

Who Else Wants To Add Power & Purpose To Their Life?

Ever see the last scene from The Bourne Supremacy? Here it is (start the clip at 1:25 in). In addition to the great soundtrack cut from Moby, you see Bourne walking off into the crowds of Manhattan.

Do you notice HOW he walks? With PURPOSE.

He has a fast stride, is focused, and is determined to move forward, quickly.

I want you to do the same thing. I want you to walk 20% faster than you do now. Why?

  1. You get where you're going faster.
  2. You use different muscles when you walk faster.
  3. You catch people's attention when you move faster.
  4. You breathe differently and your heart pumps a bit faster.
  5. It adds focus, energy, and action to every step you take.

Let me say that again — IT ADDS FOCUS, ENERGY, AND ACTION TO EVERY STEP YOU TAKE.

Focus - Since you're moving faster, you have to anticipate and react faster. So you have to hone in on what you're doing and focus.

Energy - Since you are moving your body differently and with purpose, you get the lungs, blood, and muscles all flowing.

Action - Combine both of these together and you are adding activity to a mundane process.

How many times do you catch yourself strolling or walking slowly? Ever think about how that makes you feel? That's right — it relaxes you, it slows down the energy, and allows you to focus (i.e., worry) about a lot of things.

Walking 20% faster will get you out of the doldrums, get your juices flowing, and honestly . . . ideas will pop out of your head. You WILL add power and purpose with every step.

Try it.

How To Become Unfireable – Part Five: Focus.

Start throwing some projects overboard. Today.

Everyone makes this mistake. Everyone. So don't feel bad.   We get caught up with all of our work.

Our regular tasks and duties. Old projects. Favors for your friends.

And then a new project comes along. You panic — how are you going to fit this in?

A client of mine once wrote me: “Rich — I don’t know what to do! Every time my phone rings, or when I open my email, or when I go to a meeting, my workload grows exponentially. I am currently huddled in my office with a list of to-do’s that will choke a horse!”

He then emailed me a week later (after our session): “OMG — it’s like night and day. I now have a solid list of actionable tasks which are prioritized and with stated deadlines. I’ve tossed or re-scheduled all of the lower-tier tasks — I feel amazing! Thank you RICH!” 

A smart executive regularly reviews their workload and eliminates, retires, and puts on hold those tasks, activities and projects deemed low tier.

Here's the rub — most people don't do this. They try to do everything and they don't do it very well. They hoard (I love that word) — hoard their projects like Scrooge McDuck and are afraid to let any of them get away.

You need to look at your workload like a lifeboat. It only fits 10 people. If another person wants to come aboard, someone has to go. You don't pick the most healthy, important, and vital person — you pick someone who is sickly and causing the most strife.

Frequently assess which ones are:

  • Exposure - how many people will this affect? How will you benefit when it's done?
  • Impact - how many people really use this? Is it just your pipe-dream or something you like to do?
  • Importance - how critical is it to the inner workings or success of the company?

Candidly, when your boss is taking a look at their team, they view the IMPORTANT deliverables first. They account for all the high-exposure projects — the mover and shaker initiatives first.

So start throwing some projects overboard. Today.

How To Become ‘Unfireable’ – Part Two: Hustle.

Zig Ziglar's latest podcast touched a nerve with me the other day . . .

I was listening to Zig Ziglar the other day in my Automobile University and his latest podcast touched a nerve: "In good times, there are people who do well and people who do badly. In bad times, there are people who do well and people who do badly. Step back and look at this . . . it's not the economy, it's YOU. The people who have the attitude and the drive do well."

I have another word for it: HUSTLE

HUSTLE is made up of these four qualities:

  1. Drive - Develop the mental and physical force to move mountains
  2. Enthusiasm - Develop an excitement for all you do
  3. Attitude - Stay positive and never let things get you down
  4. Focus - Stay clear on your goals and how to get to them
It's interesting our four qualities spell the word DEAF.
You need to be deaf to those who try to derail you from HUSTLING. Those who say:
  • "You can't do that."
  • "I hate this place (and you should too)."
  • "That's not the right way to do it."
  • "We don't do it that way here."
  • "You're wrong, I'm right."
If I received a dollar for every time I heard one of these phrases during my 20 years in corporate, I would be an even richer man today. These people are all over the place and it's usually their job to tear you down, hold you back, and stop you so they can take your place.

#1. Don't listen to the DERAILERS. Stay true and HUSTLE.

How To Make Work Bearable & Fun.

You hate your job. You hate going to work. You hate your boss. You hate the people you work with. You hate your cubicle. Or it's not good or bad — just boring. You watch the clock and pray for 5 PM to roll around.

Welcome to the club. We all have days like this. Here's a little secret: The difference between 1-2 bad days a month and every day being a bad day lies right in your lap.

It's called PERSPECTIVE. Most of the time, we are a huge influence on how we interpret and absorb our environment. If we have a crazy weekend and then have to look forward to the workweek, I know, it sucks.

Here's one rule which works for me and for many of my clients: Add Pizazz to EVERYTHING you do.

What does it mean? From attending a status meeting to delivering a major project — figure out how you can do it better. Make it sing. Go the extra mile to make it stand out.

Now you're probably saying you've done your best. You probably have — but I know you can do a little bit better. Look at all of your areas of delivery and see if you can add a little pizazz to your offering.

It might be offering an additional piece of information during a meeting or re-doing a promo box on your web site. Do Something.

Why does this work? It keeps you at a higher state of consciousness, performance, and focus. You are no longer wandering through your work — you're looking for opportunities to always IMPROVE.

And here's the best part — it's infectious. Your superiors instantly see it — so you get the great projects, the promotions, the spotlight. Your team members feel it — they start performing at a higher level — making you look better. Your peers observe a sea-change in you and it makes them jealous (always a good thing).

Bottom line — adding pizazz to everything you do will not only change your perception about your environment — it will change your career — and your life.

Try it, you'll like it.

2010 has been both problematic and revelatory for many of my clients, colleagues, and friends. Some are up, some are down.

But the one thing we all need to remember, is that we have the ability to change. To take action. To slowly (or quickly) start turning our fortunes around to where we want them to go.

Only YOU have the ability to change where you are.

Only YOU can make the decision to begin charting a new course.

Everyone else can only be a tool to help YOU accomplish your goals. We can show you how to swing the club, YOU are the only person who must swing and hit the ball.

So at this time of the year, let's all be thankful that we have the ability to take action. The ability to change course.

And the gratitude to realize that Friday is also a holiday — spend some time that day to start taking action.
