Free Coaching Session. Yes, That's Right.

Ever since I started my practice 15 years ago, I've always offered free coaching sessions to new prospects. Why? Coaching isn't something a typical person has encountered in their life. Also, coaching as a profession is very young - so most people don't even know it exists. That's why I sometimes get weird looks when I say I'm a 'coach'.

The comparison I use at parties and networking events centers around athletic coaching. It's kind of the same thing.

If you ever were in a sport in school, you had a coach. They were there to do a number of important things:

  1. Teach you how to play the game correctly.
  2. Teach you the basic moves and strategy.
  3. Keep you motivated when things get tough.
  4. Keep you focused on the goal.
  5. Address injuries and help you get back into the game.
  6. Play with good sportsmanship.
  7. Work well with the team.
  8. Keep your eye on the competition.
  9. And most of all: A good coach will change your life.

Guess what? That's what a business coach does. Unfortunately, not a lot of people have applied these coaching elements to their business or career. That's where I come in.

That's why I offer a free coaching session — so interested prospects can learn more about me, my background and how I coach. I then take them through a REAL coaching session — where they test drive what I can do for them.

Most of the time — it's transformational. I guarantee two things when I coach someone:

  1. You will be coached by a qualified professional about your unique situation.
  2. You will experience 1-2 significant breakthroughs during our session.

Treading Water Is The Same As Drowning.

Many people today feel they are just 'one bad decision away' from losing their job or business. So instead of making decisions, they make NO decision. Or if they have to make a decision, they take the least offensive, least impactful, least expensive, and most spineless way out. Most of the time, that's the wrong thing to do.

What happens? You ensure management is happy while you infuriate your staff, vendors, and smart clients.

Who thinks big and takes chances? Apple.

  • In 1998 — they launched the iMac without a floppy disk drive ("How will we transfer files?).
  • In 2007 — they launched the iPhone - no experience (joining the fray with huge, entrenched leaders).
  • In 2010 — they launched the MacBook Air without a DVD drive ("How will I watch movies?").
  • In 2016 — they launched a new MacBook Pro with 4 USB-C ports ("How will I connect my stuff?).

Each time the media made fun of them and pundits attacked. One year later, everyone embraced the change and moved forward. The result? One of the biggest companies on the planet with a product line admired by all.

To move up and to be noticed by the people that matter, you need to be bold and sometimes stick your neck out. You might hit a home run (most of the time) and sometimes, you might get it cut off (rarely).

That's why I suggest to my clients that they all have INSURANCE. For example:

  • An up-to-date résumé, done by a professional, ready to be distributed at a moment's notice.
  • A polished and professional LinkedIn page, with recent professional headshot, testimonials, etc.
  • Actively networking and connecting with movers and shakers outside of your sphere.
  • Learning new things about your industry, taking classes, reading books and writing about what you learn.
  • Attending events (industry symposiums, charities, etc.).
  • Finally, hire a coach — they help you perform at your peak and help you make the tough decisions.

Once you have those things in your back pocket, it's not that hard to make the tough decisions that need to be made.

The Two Most Important Days Of Your Life.

“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” — Mark Twain What a powerful quote. But what does it really mean?

And more importantly, what does it really mean TO YOU?

Some people already know — they're sure about their purpose. There are also some people who have a good idea, but they aren't 100% sure about why they're on this earth.

And then there are people who don't know. Why is that?

  • They don't want to know. When they get close to learning their true purpose — they step back and shy away.
  • They go through life without a purpose. They don't realize the magic of having a purpose and the power it brings.
  • They vacillate from one purpose to another. This isn't a bad thing — but in the end it probably causes internal and external confusion of purpose.

So the big question is — How do you figure out your life's purpose? I have some strategies:

  • Sit down and think, meditate and reflect.
  • Review where you've been, what you've done, and who you've impacted/influenced so far.
  • Review what things/people/activities energize you (and what ones enervate you).
  • Start to finely focus your lens and cull down your choices to a few.
  • Then step back and look at the whole picture.
  • Finally, make a clear decision, understand what your purpose is, and move forward.

Years ago, two powerful things happened which helped me fully understand my purpose in life.

First, one of my best friends from college, Dave Taylor, recommended a book to me — Tuesdays With Morrie. I can't tell you how much this book changed my life and outlook on the world. If you haven't read it — READ IT. If you have — READ IT AGAIN.

It allowed me to briefly step off the corporate rat race mentally and better understand what are the really important things in life.

Second, I hired Karen Gregaitis, my Dale Carnegie trainer and coach to help me excel and cope with my erratic corporate leadership role. She recommended I take an assessment call Tru-Values (a tool I use with many of my clients) which allowed me to better understand the value drivers in my life.

To this day, I focus on my four values - Encourage, Energize, Enlighten & Have Fun. Wonder why I coach, write, and speak?
